Getting Settled

After traveling practically non-stop for the last 5 days we're finally remaining in one location for a few days. That location being Kandahar airfield. We flew here from Bagram on a small passenger plane on almost no sleep from the busy day before. Our check-in location, directly off the landing strip, was in an old bulding with a crumbling interior brick and morter fascade. Come to find out that the bulding is known as the 'Taliban's Last Stand' and much of the dilapidation was due to heated battles that occured in that very spot. There are visible bullet holes scattered throughout many of the walls. It's good to know that this area is somewhat more peaceful now. But judging by the number of soldiers being flown in and out armed with heavy artillery, the violence is ongoing elsewhere. Especially in the coming summer months, the time known as the  'fighting season.' We haven't heard any gunfire or rocket/morter attacks so far. But based on what I've heard, that's not likely to remain the case for the whole time Jeff and I remain here. The next few days we'll be covering stories on the base. Then I believe we'll tag along on some flight missions, such as med-evac and air-dropping soldiers. Then finally we'll head out into the field to tag along on some ground missions with soldiers from the 2nd Brigade of the 101st.
